Research interests:

One of the main research tasks realized at the Department of Genetics and Evolution is phylogeography and conservation genetics of endangered birch species: Betula humilis and Betula nana. Using different molecular methods (PCR-RFLP, AFLP, analyses of nuclear microsatellites and gene sequences) we studied postglacial routes of recolonisation as well as genetic diversity and differentiation of the marginal and central populations of both plants. Hybridisation between B. humilis and its widespread congeners Betula pendula and Betula pubescens was also assessed. To describe factors responsible for genetic resources of the endangered birches we investigate habitat conditions and effectiveness of generative reproduction in their locations.

Another research topic in the field of conservation genetics is the analysis of the common hamster (Cricetus cricetus) populations in Europe. The species is endangered in most of the European countries and the reasons for the dramatic decline of the range are still not fully understood. Through phylogeographical research we add knowledge to the postglacial history of European mammals and for the common hamster conservation plans. The analyses of within and among populations genetic variability help to establish the genetic structure of populations, connectivity and effects of geographical and ecological barriers on the gene flow.

The third research area is the paleontology of Antarctic penguins.

The fourth object of work in DGE is the evaluation of the genetic diversity and adaptations of bacteria living in symbiotic associations (rhizobia) with legumes (Fabaceae) which inhabits about 100-yrs old zinc-lead waste heaps in Poland in the remediation context.

Moreover, the Department of Genetics and Evolution was, for many years, involved in projects concerning the chromosomal polymorphisms in the common shrew (Sorex araneus) and the yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis). The chromosomal structure and the evolutionary processes in the hybrid zones, behaviour of chromosomes in meiosis of hybrids or influence of chromosomal variants on the individual and population fitness were some of the research interests of the department.
